คือใจความสำคัญหรือใจความหลักของเรื่อง เป็นส่วนสำคัญที่สุดของเรื่องที่ผู้เขียนต้องการบอกให้ผู้อ่านทราบว่า ผู้เขียนได้เขียนเกี่ยวกับเรื่องอะไร ซึ่งเป็นส่วนที่ครอบคลุม และควบคุมเรื่องนั้นๆ
Main Idea มี 2 ชนิด

1. State main idea คือ หลักใหญ่ใจความที่สำคัญที่สุดของเรื่อง ซึ่งผู้เขียนบอกมาตรงๆ สามารถครอบคลุมเนื้อหาของเรื่องได้ทั้งหมด จะต้องตั้ง main idea ไว้ในการเขียน และบรรยายหรือธิบายโดยยึด main idea เป็นหลัก ส่วนที่ขยายหรือบรรยายให้รายละเอียดต่อจาก main idea คือ supporting idea โดยปกติ ในเนื้อความหนึ่งๆ เรามักจะพบ state main idea ได้ในตอนต้น ตอนกลาง หรือตอนท้ายของย่อหน้า
Bicycles are very popular today in many countries. Many people use bicycles for exercise. But exercise is only one of the reasons why bicycle are popular. Another reason is money. Bicycles are not expensive to buy. They do not need gas to make them go. They also are easy and cheap to fix. In cities, many people like bicycles better than cars. With a bicycle, they never have to wait in traffic. They also do not have to find a place to park. And finally, bicycles do not cause any pollution!

Vitamin C, for example, helps to build strong teeth and helps us to resist infections. Vitamin A helps us to keep skin healthy and protects our eyes. Iron, also an important part of vegetables, builds red blood cells. Without enough iron, we would suffer from an illness called anemia.

The roadrunner is about sixty centimeters in length. Half of this is its tail. Its short wings seem out of proportion to its long legs. Although the roadrunner is a bird, it runs more than its flies. The roadrunner is truly one of the strangest-looking birds.

Most of the windows are broken, and the ones that were not broken were very dirty. Cracks in the walls were both wide and deep; the outside concrete of the building kept breaking away. The plumbing had long been ruined by vandals. And electric wiring had been pulled out. The building simply was not fit to live in.
