กล่าวโดยสรุปแล้ว อุบัติเหตุ หมายถึง เหตุการณที่เกิดขึ้นโดยฉับพลันทันทีทันใด ไมไดมีการวางแผนหรือเตรียมการหรือคาดการณ์ไวลวงหนา เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่ไม่พึงปรารถนาให้เกิดขึ้น ซึ่งผลของมันเมื่อเกิดขึ้นแลวกอใหเกิดความเสียหายหลายประการ อันตรายต่อสุขภาพ เชน ทําใหเกิดการบาดเจ็บ พิการ ตาย หรือเกิดความเสียหายแกทรัพยสิน และมีผลกระทบกระเทือนขบวนการผลิตปกติ ทําใหเกิดความลาชาหรือเสียเวลา แมวาจะไมกอใหเกิดการบาดเจ็บก็ตาม และก่อให้เกิด ความเสียหายหลายอย่างร่วมกัน
2.1.2 สาเหตุของการเกิดอุบัติเหตุในการปฏิบัติงาน

2.1 การทำงานไม่ถูกวิธีหรือไม่ถูกขั้นตอน
