บาสเกตบอลเป็นกีฬาที่เล่นระหว่างผู้เล่น 2 ชุด ชุดละ 5 คน โดยมีจุดมุ่งหมายว่า แต่ละชุดต้องนำลูกบอลไปโยนให้ลงห่วงประตูของคู่แข่งขัน และพยายามป้องกันมิให้อีกฝ่ายหนึ่งได้ครอบครองลูกบอล หรือทำคะแนน ทั้งนี้ผู้เล่นอาจจะส่ง โยน ปัดกลิ้ง หรือเลี้ยงลูกบอลไปยังทิศทางใดก็ได้ให้ถูกต้องตามกติกา การเล่นบาสเกตบอลต้องเล่นเป็นทีม แต่ละทีมจะประกอบไปด้วยผู้เล่นไม่เกิน 10 คน และโค้ช 1 คน ผู้เล่นคนใดคนหนึ่งจะเป็นหัวหน้าทีม แต่ละทีมอาจจะมีผู้ช่วยโค้ชอีก 1 คน สำหรับทัวร์นาเมนต์ที่ทีมนั้นจะต้องแข่งขันมากกว่า 3 ครั้ง จำนวนผู้เล่นในแต่ละทีมอาจจะเพิ่มเป็น 12 คนก็ได้ ผู้เล่น 5 คนของแต่ละทีมจะต้องอยู่ในสนามแข่งขันระหว่างเวลาการแข่งขัน และสามารถเปลี่ยนตัวผู้เล่นได้ตามที่ระบุไว้ในกติกา
