จุดประสงค์ของการแข่งเรือยาวไม่ได้แข่งเพื่อการเอาชนะแต่แข่งเพื่อฉลองเทศกาลออกพรรษา และแข่งเพื่อให้ความสนุกสนานและสามัคคีแก่ชาวบ้าน ถึงแม้ในปัจจุบันการแข่งเรือยาวอาจจะไม่เหมือนในสมัยก่อน ไม่มีการร้องเพลงแห่เรือ แต่กลายเป็นเปิดเพลงลูกทุ่งแทน แต่ก็ยังมีหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ที่ให้ความสำคัญ จึงได้มีการจัดแข่งเรือยาวกันอย่างกว้างขวางในหลายจังหวัดและจัดเป็นประจำทุกปีจนทำให้ประเพณีการแข่งเรือยาวได้กลายเป็นที่รู้จักและเป็นที่สนใจของนักท่องเที่ยวชาวต่างชาติ
