ปี พ.ศ. 2369 ในรัชกาลที่ 3 แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ เจ้าอนุวงษ์แห่งเวียงจันทน์ได้ก่อกบฏ ยกทัพมาบุกยึดเมืองนครราชสีมา ทางกรุงเทพได้ส่งกองทัพมาปราบ ฝ่ายเจ้าอนุวงษ์ได้ถอยร่มไปตั้งรับอยู่ที่เมือง"หนองบัวลุ่มภู"ต่อสูรบกันเป็นสามารถ และติดตามจับเจ้าอนุวงษ์ได้ที่เมืองเวียงจันทน์ แล้วนำตัวไปพิจารณาโทษที่กรุงเทพด้วยการทรมานและประจานอยู่หลายวันจนเสียชีวิตในกรงขังปี พ.ศ. 2433 สมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ โปรดเกล้าฯให้จัดระเบียบปกครองเมืองทางลุ่มแม่น้ำโขงใหม่ โดยให้ข้าหลวงเมืองหนองคายบังคับบัญชา ช่วงนี้เมืองหนองบัวลำภูขึ้นอยู่กับเมืองหนองคาย ต่อมาได้โปรดเกล้าฯให้แต่งข้าหลวงใหญ่ล้วนเป็นพระเจ้าน้องยาเธอ ประจำภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ 3 พระองค์ในปี พ.ศ. 2434 คือ กรมหลวงพิชิตปรีชากร เรียกว่า "ข้าหลวงเมืองลาวกาว" เป็นข้าหลวงประทับ ณ เมืองอุบลราชธานี และในปี พ.ศ. 2436 กรมหลวงประจักษ์ศิลปาคม เป็นข้าหลวงใหญ่ประทับ ณ เมืองอุดรธานี เรียกว่า "ข้าหลวงเมืองลาวพวน" และกรมหลวงสรรพสิทธิประสงค์ เป็นข้าหลวงใหญประทับ ณ เมืองอุบลราชธานี เรียกว่า "ข้าหลวงหัวเมืองลาวกาว" หนองบัวลำภูขึ้นสังกัดกับเมืองลาวพวนและแต่งตั้ง "พระวิชดยดมกมุทเขต" มาครองเมืองนครเขื่อนขันธ์กาบแก้วบัวบาน ซึ่งมีฐานะเป็นเมืองเอกของมณฑลลาวพวนและเปลี่ยนชือเมืองใหม่ว่า "เมืองกมุทธาไสยบุรีรมย์" และเป็นข้าหลวงคนสุดท้ายของเมืองปี พ.ศ. 2443 รัชกาลที่ 5 แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์เปลี่ยนชือมณฑลฝ่ายเหนือเป็นมณฑลอุดรและรวมผังเมืองต่างๆ ในมณลอุดรเป็น 5 บริเวณ ได้แก่ บริเวณบ้านหมากแข้ง บริเวณธาตุพนม บริเวณสกลนคร บริเวณพาชี บริเวณน้ำเหือง เมืองกมุทธาสัยได้ถูกรวมอยู่ในบริเวณบ้านหมากแข้งประกอบด้วย 7 เมืองคือ เมืองหมากแข้ง หนองคาย หนองหาน กุมภวาปี กมุทธาสัย โพนพิสัย และรัตนวาปี ตั้งที่ว่าการอยู่ที่บ้านหมากแข้งปี พ.ศ. 2449 ได้โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เปลี่ยนชื่อเมืองกมุทธาสัยมาเป็น "เมืองหนองบัวลุ่มภูและเพี้ยนเป็นหนองบัวลำภูในปัจจุบัน"ขึ้นกับบริเวณบ้านหมากแข้ง ปี พ.ศ. 2450 ได้โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้กระทรวงมหาดไทยรวมเมืองต่าง ๆ ในบริเวณบ้านหมากแข้งตั้งเป็นเมืองจัตวา เรียกว่า "เมืองอุดรธานี" ส่วนเมืองในสังกัดบริเวณให้มีฐานะเป็นอำเภอ เมืองหนองบัวลำภู จึงกลายเป็น อำเภอหนองบัวลำภู และมีอำเภอที่เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของจังหวัดหนองบัวลำภูในปัจจุบัน โดยจัดตั้งขึ้นตามลำดับ 4 กิ่งอำเภอ คือ1. กิ่งอำเภอโนนสัง เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 24912. กิ่งอำเภอศรีบุญเรือง เมื่อวันที่ 16 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 25083. กิ่งอำเภอนากลาง เมื่อวันที่ 16 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2508 4. กิ่งอำเภอสุวรรณคูหา เมื่อวันที่ 17 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2516ปี พ.ศ. 2536 ประกาศจัดตั้งเป็น จังหวัดหนองบัวลำภู เมื่อวันที่ 1 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2536 โดยประกาศในหนังสือราชกิจจานุเบกษา ฉบับพิเศษ เล่มที่ 110 ตอนที่ 125 ลงวันที่ 2 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2536
