ไทยอาจเหลือเวลาอีกไม่มากนัก ในการเตรียมตัวทั้งในเชิงรุกและเชิงรับรองรับการเป็น “ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (ASEAN Economic Community : AEC)” ในปี 2558 ซึ่ง AEC ก็คือ ประเทศอาเซียน 10 ประเทศที่ได้มีการขยายความสัมพันธ์ทางเศรษฐกิจ ในวงกว้างขึ้นจากเดิมที่เน้นการเชื่อมโยงความสัมพันธ์ทางการค้าภายใต้เขตการค้าเสรีอาเซียน หรือ อาฟตา(AFTA) ด้านเดียว แต่ด้านภาวะการแข่งขัน
และกระแสการรวมกลุ่มเศรษฐกิจในภูมิภาคต่างๆที่รุนแรงขึ้นทำให้ประเทศอาเซียนได้พยายามสร้างความเป็นปึกแผ่นทางเศรษฐกิจภายในภูมิภาคอันจะช่วยเพิ่มบทบาทและอำนาจต่อรองของอาเซียนในเวทีเศรษฐกิจโลก
