จีนเริ่มเข้ามามีบทบาทในอาเซียนมากขึ้น และเป็นคู่ค้าอันดับต้นๆ ของทุกประเทศในอาเซียน โดยเฉพาะประเทศไทย โดยในปี 2556 การค้าไทย-จีน มีมูลค่า 4.57 แสนล้านเหรียญสหรัฐฯ ขยายตัวร้อยละ 10.2 เมื่อเทียบกับปี 2555 โดยหลังจากนี้ จีนจะให้ความสำคัญกับการปฏิรูปและปรับโครงสร้างเศรษฐกิจภายในประเทศ รวมทั้งให้ความสำคัญกับการเร่งพัฒนาพื้นที่ตอนในและฝั่งตะวันตกของประเทศ
