Prime Minister’s Export Award or PM Award) จัดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อปี 2535 ในสมัยนายกรัฐมนตรีอานันท์ ปันยารชุน โดยมีเป้าหมายที่จะสนับสนุนและให้ความสำคัญแก่ผู้ส่งออกสินค้าและบริการที่มีผลงานดีเด่น มีการริเริ่มและพยายามบุกเบิกตลาดต่างประเทศภายใต้ชื่อทางการค้าของตนเอง และมีการออกแบบผลิตภัณฑ์ของตนเองจนเป็นที่ยอมรับในตลาดโลก รวมทั้งสนับสนุนการสร้างภาพลักษณ์องค์กรที่ดีให้แก่ผู้ประกอบการที่มีส่วนผลักดันการส่งออกสินค้าและบริการของประเทศ รางวัลดังกล่าวถือเป็นรางวัลสูงสุดของรัฐบาลที่มอบให้แก่ผู้ส่งออก ซึ่งนายกรัฐมนตรีเป็นประธานในพิธีประกาศเกียรติคุณและมอบรางวัลดังกล่าวอย่างต่อเนื่องจนถึงปัจจุบัน โดยกรมส่งเสริมการค้าระหว่างประเทศ เป็นผู้ดำเนินการพิจารณารางวัลมาสม่ำเสมอ
