สำหรับแหล่งที่มาของ น้ำเสียพอจะแบ่งได้เป็น 2 แหล่งใหญ่ ๆ ดังนี้

1. น้ำเสียจากแหล่งชุมชน มาจากกิจกรรมสำหรับการดำรงชีวิตของคนเรา เช่น อาคารบ้านเรือน หมู่บ้านจัดสรร คอนโดมิเนียม โรงแรม ตลาดสด โรงพยาบาล เป็นต้น จากการศึกษาพบว่าความเน่าเสียของคูคลองเกิดจากน้ำเสียประเภทนี้ ถึงประมาณ 75%



2. น้ำเสียจากกิจกรรมอุตสาหกรรม ได้แก่น้ำเสียจากขบวนผลิตของโรงงานอุตสาหกรรมรวมทั้งน้ำหล่อเย็นที่มี ความร้อนสูงและน้ำเสียจากห้องน้ำ ห้องส้วมของคนงาน ด้วยความเน่าเสียของคูคลองเกิดจากน้ำเสียประเภทนี้ประมาณ 25% แม้จะมีปริมาณไม่มากนัก แต่สิ่งสกปรกในน้ำเสียจะเป็นพวกสารเคมีที่เป็นพิษและพวกโลหะหนักต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งพวก สารอินทรีย์ต่างๆ ที่มีความเข้มข้นสูงอีกด้วย
