วัดพายัพ เป็นวัดเก่าแก่ของเมืองนครราชสีมา สร้างขึ้นในรัชสมัย สมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช เมื่อครั้งพระองค์ทรงครองราชย์อาณาจักรกรุงศรีอยุธยา ได้ทรงเลือกสถานที่ในการสร้างเมืองนครราชสีมา จึงให้ช่างฝรั่งเศสเขียนแบบแปลนก่อสร้าง เป็นรูปเหลี่ยม มีคูคลองน้ำรอบกั้นข้าศึก มีกำแพงประตูเมือง 4 มุมเมือง และได้ทรงสร้างวัดขึ้นภายในกำแพงเมืองจำนวน 6 วัด คือ วัดพระนารายณ์ (วัดกลาง) วัดบึง วัดบูรพ์ วัดอิสาน วัดสระแก้ว และวัดพายัพ
