สืบเนื่องมาจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ทรงปฏิบัติพระราชกรณียกิจเกี่ยวกับการพัฒนาที่ดินมาอย่างต่อเนื่องและยาวนาน ปรากฏผลสำเร็จเป็นที่ประจักษ์อย่างกว้างขวางทั้งในประเทศและนานาชาติ โดยศาสตราจารย์เกียรติคุณ ดร. สตีเฟน นอร์ตคลิฟฟ์ (Emeritus Professor Dr. Stephen Nortcliff) กรรมการบริหารสหภาพวิทยาศาสตร์ทางดินนานาชาติ เข้าเฝ้าทูลละอองธุลีพระบาท ทูลเกล้าทูลกระหม่อมถวายรางวัลนักวิทยาศาสตร์ดินเพื่อมนุษยธรรม (The Humanitarian Soil Scientist) เมื่อวันที่ 16 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2556 และขอพระบรมราชาอนุญาตให้วันที่ 5 ธันวาคมของทุกปีเป็น "วันดินโลก"[2] เพื่อให้วันดังกล่าวเป็นที่รู้จักแพร่หลายในระดับนานาชาติเกิดความต่อเนื่องและจริงจังในการรณรงค์ด้านทรัพยากรดินในทุกระดับ
