สหกิจศึกษา (Co-operative Education: Co-op) เป็นระบบการศึกษาที่เน้นประสบการณ์ที่ได้รับจากการปฏิบัติงานจริงในสถานประกอบการ (Work-based learning) โดยที่สถาบันอุดมศึกษาจัดให้นิสิตที่กำลังศึกษาในระดับปริญญาตรี ไปปฏิบัติงานจริงในสถานประกอบการอย่างเป็นระบบก่อนสำเร็จการศึกษา โดยที่นิสิตจะต้องปฏิบัติงานจริงแบบเต็มเวลาตรงตามสาขาวิชาชีพและเป็นประโยชน์ต่อสถานประกอบการ เสมือนหนึ่งเป็นเจ้าหน้าที่หรือพนักงานปฏิบัติงานชั่วคราว ณ สถานประกอบการที่ให้ความร่วมมือ เป็นเวลาไม่น้อยกว่า 16 สัปดาห์ ซึ่งในการปฏิบัติงานนั้น สถานประกอบการอาจกำหนดให้นิสิตสหกิจศึกษาปฏิบัติงานในตำแหน่งที่มีหน้าที่รับผิดชอบที่แน่นอน โดยงานที่ได้รับมอบหมายเป็นงานที่มีคุณภาพ เช่น ผู้ช่วยวิศวกร ผู้ช่วยนักวิชาการ ผู้ช่วยงาน ฯลฯ หรือ กำหนดงานเป็นโครงงานพิเศษที่เป็นประโยชน์กับสถานประกอบการและสามารถทำสำเร็จได้ ภายใน
16 สัปดาห์ โดยสถานประกอบการจะจัดหาพี่เลี้ยงหรือพนักงานที่ปรึกษา (Mentor หรือ Job Supervisor)
