อุทยานแห่งชาติภูกระดึง จังหวัดเลย คืออุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับ 2 ของประเทศไทย เป็นโรงเรียนแห่งแรกของนักเดินทางผู้นิยมธรรมชาติหลายต่อหลายรุ่น ตำนานเล่าว่า นายพรานคนหนึ่งติดตามล่าสัตว์ขึ้นไปจนพบดินแดนอันงดงามเหมือนสรวงสวรรค์แห่งนี้ บนยอดตัดของภูเขาหินทรายสูงจากระดับน้ำทะเลปานกลาง 400 - 1,200 เมตร รูปทรงเหมือนกระดึง มีพื้นที่ราบบนยอดเขากว้างใหญ่คล้ายรูปใบบอน เป็นแหล่งต้นน้ำของลำน้ำพอง อากาศค่อนข้างเย็นตลอดปี เปิดฤดูการท่องเที่ยวตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 ตุลาคมถึงวันที่ 31 พฤษภาคมของทุกปี และปิดฤดูการท่องเที่ยวตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 มิถุนายนถึงวันที่ 30 กันยายน เพื่อให้ป่าได้คืนสภาพ
