พระยาภักดีชุมพล เป็นบุคคลที่ชาวชัยภูมิเคารพนับถือ และยกย่องให้เป็นวีรบุรุษ ตามตำนานกล่าวว่า ราวปี พ.ศ 2360 ท้าวแล ชาวเวียงจันทน์ ได้อพยพไพร่พลจำนวนหนึ่ง มาลงหลักปักฐานสร้างชุมชน บนแผ่นดินไทย ที่บ้านน้ำขุ่นหนองอีจาน (ปัจจุบันอยู่ในเขต อ. สูงเนิน จ. นครราชสีมา) ทว่ายังส่งส่วยบรรณาการ ต่อเจ้าอนุวงศ์แห่งเวียงจันทน์ มิได้ขาดจนได้รับบำเหน็จ ความชอบเป็นขุนภักดีชุมพล และพระยาภักดีชุมพลตามลำดับ กระทั่งเมื่อชุมชนอื่นๆ ที่อยู่ใกล้เคียงหันมาขึ้นต่อกรุงเทพฯ ผ่านทางเมืองนครราชสีมา พระยาภักดีชุมพลจึงหันมาขึ้นต่อกรุงเทพฯ แต่บัดนั้น
