ผู้สูงอายุ เป็นวัยซึ่งมีความแตกต่างจากวัยอื่น เป็นวัยบั้นปลายของชีวิต ดังนั้นปัญหาของผู้สูงอายุในทุกด้านโดยเฉพาะด้านสังคม และสาธารณสุข จึงแตกต่างจากคนในวัยอื่น ปัจจุบันจำนวนผู้สูงอายุเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่องทั้งในประเทศไทยและทั่วโลก ซึ่งรัฐบาลไทย และทั่วโลกได้ตระหนักถึงความสำคัญในเรื่องนี้ จึงมีความพยายาม และมีการรณรงค์อย่างต่อเนื่อง ให้ทุกคนตระหนัก เข้าใจ และพร้อมดูแลผู้สูงอายุให้ทัดเทียมเช่นเดียวกับการดูแลประชากรในกลุ่มอายุอื่น
