ประเพณีลอยกระทงไทยใหญ่ เป็นประเพณีเก่าแก่ของชาวไตซึ่งเป็นชุมชนดั้งเดิมของจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน โดยมีคติความเชื่อว่าเป็นการจัดขึ้นเพื่อเป็นพุทธบูชา และบูชาพระอุปคุต 8 องค์ หรือพระอรหันต์ตามความเชื่อของชาวไตโบราณ ซึ่งเชื่อว่าพระอรหันต์ทั้ง 8 องค์นี้ มี 4 องค์ที่มรณภาพแล้ว ส่วนที่เหลืออีก 4 องค์ยังคงปฏิบัติธรรมอยู่ในกลางมหานพ และทุกวันเพ็ญเดือน 12 พระอรหันต์ทั้ง 4 จะเวียนขึ้นมาโปรดสัตว์และเผยแพร่พระพุทธศาสนา โดยชาวไตจะถวายอัฐบริขารต่างๆอันเป็นประเพณีสืบต่อจากประเพณีจองพาราซึ่งทำ ถวายพระพุทธเจ้า โดยจะบูชาพระอุปคุตและลอยสิ่งของเครื่องใช้ต่างๆลงในลำน้ำเพื่อเป็นการให้ ทานและถวายเป็นพุทธบูชา
