วันผู้สูงอายุแห่งชาติ เป็นวันที่ผูกรวมไว้กับวันขึ้นปีใหม่ของไทยคือ วันสงกรานต์ เพื่อร่วมรณรงค์ให้ประชาชนทุกกลุ่มเห็นคุณค่าและตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของผู้สูงอายุ เพื่อเป็นการแสดงออกถึงความเคารพ ความกตัญญูกตเวที สร้างขวัญและกำลังใจให้ผู้สูงอายุในการประกอบคุณงามความดีให้แก่ชุมชนและเป็นการส่งเสริมให้ผู้สูงอายุได้มีโอกาสพบปะแลกเปลี่ยนเรียนรุ้ประสบการณ์ต่อกันและถ่ายทอดให้ลูกหลานรุ่นหลังได้รับฟังและถือเอกเป็นแบบอย่างในการดำเนินชีวิตต่อไป ประเพณีนี้ทางภาคใต้เรียกว่า ประเพณีรดน้ำ ขอพร โดยมีความเชื่อว่า น้ำจะช่วยชะล้างความโชคร้าย และถือเป็นการอวยพรปีใหม่ให้แก่กัน
