ความเป็นมาและความสำคัญของปัญหา
ในปัจจุบันนี้แม้ว่าความรู้และเทคโนโลยีทางการแพทย์มีความเจริญก้าวหน้าอย่างต่อเนื่อง ทำให้ผู้ใช้บริการด้านการสุขภาพมีรอดชีวิตจากภาวะเจ็บป่วยที่รุนแรงและอยู่ในโรงพยาบาลนานขึ้น จากการพัฒนาดังกล่าวนั้นทำให้ผู้ที่มีภาวะการเจ็บป่วยที่ซับซ้อนและต้องการการดูแลอย่างใกล้ชิดจำเป็นต้องอยู่ในหออภิบาลผู้ป่วยหนัก แต่ปัญหาที่สำคัญอย่างหนึ่งคือการติดเชื้อขณะที่อยู่ในโรงพยาบาล (Andrade, Jones, Gales, & Gales, 2003) เช่น การติดเชื้อระบบทางเดินหายใจ การติดเชื้อในกระแสโลหิต การติดเชื้อระบบทางเดินปัสสาวะและเนื้อเยื่ออ่อน การติดเชื้อในโรงพยาบาลดังกล่าวจำนวนไม่น้อยที่มีสาเหตุจากเชื้อที่ดื้อต่อยาปฏิชีวนะและมีอัตราเพิ่มมากขึ้น (Clock, Cohen, Behta, Loss & Larson, 2010; Wareham et al., 2008) โดยมีเชื้อโรคที่เป็นสาเหตุของการติดเชื้อดังกล่าวเช่น เชื้อ Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), extended-spectrum beta-lactamse (BSBL)-producing Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii ที่ดื้อต่อยาปฏิชีวนะหลายขนาน (Milsontone, Bryant, Huskins, & Zerr, 2010)
