งานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับการออกแบบอย่างเหมาะสมที่สุด ได้มีการพัฒนามาอย่างต่อเนื่องจากอดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน จากแนวคิดคือการหาค่าจุดต่ำสุดของสมการในเชิงของตัวเลข ซึ่งการหาค่าจุดต่ำสุดสำหรับการออกแบบโครงสร้างคอนกรีตเสริมเหล็กนั้นเป็นไปได้ยากเนื่องจากสมการมีความซับซ้อนอยู่มาก อย่างไรก็ตาม มีการนำวิธีต่างๆมาประยุกต์ใช้ในการออกแบบอย่างเหมาะสม เช่น วิธีอัลกอริทึมเชิงพันธุกรรม (Genetic algorithm) วิธีอย่างง่าย (Simplex method) วิธีอาณาจักรมด (Ant colony optimization) และอื่นๆ [1, 2]
