อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาหลวง ได้จัดตั้งขึ้

อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาหลวง ได้จัดตั้งขึ้นตามมติคณะรัฐมนตรี กำหนดให้ป่าเขาหลวงและป่าอื่นๆ ในท้องที่จังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช รวม 14 ป่า เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ กรมป่าไม้ได้ทำการสำรวจเบื้องต้นเกี่ยวกับสภาพพื้นที่บริเวณป่าเขาหลวงจะถูกวาตภัย ในปี พ.ศ. 2505 ทำให้ไม้ขนาดใหญ่ล้มโค่นเป็นจำนวนมาก นอกจากนั้นป่าแห่งนี้ยังมีคุณค่าควรแก่การเก็บรักษาไว้ เพื่อประโยชน์ในการพักผ่อนหย่อนใจ การศึกษา ค้นคว้าวิจัยและคุ้มครองรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่า นับว่าควรค่าแก่การจัดเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ ซึ่งต่อมาได้มีมติคณะกรรมการอุทยานแห่งชาติ จากการประชุมครั้งที่ 1/2517 เมื่อวันที่ 22 มกราคม 2517 เห็นชอบในหลักการให้จัดตั้งเป็นอุทยาน โดยได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกากำหนดบริเวณที่ดินป่าเขาหลวงในท้องที่ตำบลดอนตะโก ตำบลกะทูน ตำบลพิปูน ตำบลยางค้อม อำเภอพิปูน ตำบลละอาย ตำบลช้างกลาง อำเภอฉวาง ตำบลท่างิ้ว อำเภอเมือง ตำบลพรหมโลก ตำบลบ้านเกาะ ตำบลอินทคีรี อำเภอพรหมคีรี และตำบลเขาแก้ว ตำบลท่าดี ตำบลกำโลน อำเภอลานสกา จังหวัดนครสรีธรรมราช ให้เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ ตามประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่มที่ 91 ตอนที่ 216 ลงวันที่ 18 ธันวาคม 2517 นับเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติแห่งที่ 9 ของประเทศ
