พบว่า การออกแบบเพื่อสิ่งแวดล้อม เป็นการลดผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพมาก
การออกแบบเพื่อสิ่งแวดล้อม จึงเข้ามามีบทบาทสำคัญต่อกระบวนการผลิตสินค้า โดยเป็นกระบวนการที่ผนวกแนวคิดด้านเศรษฐกิจและด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมเข้าไปในขั้นตอนการออกแบบ เพื่อพัฒนาผลิตภัณฑ์ที่เป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม ซึ่งรวมถึงการวิเคราะห์สมรรถนะทางด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมของผลิตภัณฑ์ การจัดการซากที่หมดอายุ การลดผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมในทุกช่วงของวงจรชีวิตของผลิตภัณฑ์ โดยควบคู่กับการวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยด้านอื่นๆ เช่น ต้นทุน กระบวนการผลิต การควบคุมคุณภาพ และการตลาด
