คณะกรรมการสมาคม Y.M.C.A. ได้พยายามหาหนทางแก้ไขให้บรรดาสมาชิกทั้งหลายได้เล่นกีฬาในช่วงฤดูหนาวโดยไม่บังเกิดความเบื่อหน่าย แต่เดิมนั้นการเล่นบาสเกตบอล ลูกบอลที่ทำขึ้นในตอนแรกนั้นมีสีน้ำตาล แต่ต่อมาจึงเปลี่ยนมาใช้ลูกสีส้มเพื่อให้ผู้เล่นและผู้ชมมองเห็นลูกได้ง่ายขึ้น และก็ใช้ต่อเนื่องจนถึงปัจจุบัน
