ปัจจุบันมีการใช้พลังงานจากเชื้อเพลิงฟอสซิลเพิ่มมากขึ้น ซึ่งอาจก่อให้เกิดสภาวะขาดแคลนพลังงานในอนาคต เนื่องจากประเทศไทยไม่สามารถผลิตเชื้อเพลิงฟอสซิลได้เพียงพอ ต้องพึ่งการนำเข้าจากต่างประเทศ จึงเกิดการนำพลังงานทดแทนต่างๆมาใช้ ซึ่งเอทานอลหรือเอทิลแอลกอฮอล์ก็เป็นทางเลือกหนึ่ง เนื่องจากเอทานอลเป็นเชื้อเพลิงที่สามารถผลิตได้เองและใช้วัตถุดิบที่มีอยู่มากมายภายในประเทศ สามารถนำไปใช้เป็นส่วนผสมของน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงประเภทแก๊สโซฮอล์ เพื่อใช้ทดแทนน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงที่ปัจจุบันมีราคาสูงขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง งานวิจัยนี้จึงทำการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิภาพการผลิตเอทานอลจากกากน้ำตาล,ข้าวฟ่าง และซังข้าวโพด โดยชี้วัดในการศึกษานี้คือ ปริมาณ คุณภาพของเอทานอลที่ผลิตได้และความคุ้มค่าทางเศรษฐศาสตร์ของการใช้วัตถุดิบชนิดต่างๆดังกล่าว เพื่อวางแผนในการเตรียมวัตถุดิบในการผลิตเอทานอล และเป็นการส่งเสริมการใช้พลังงานทดแทน ลดการนำเข้าเชื้อเพลิงจากต่างประเทศเพื่อความมั่นคงทางพลังงานของประเทศต่อไปในอนาคต
