ศูนย์มรดกโลก กรุงปารีส สาธารณรัฐฝรั่งเศส ได้ให้การรับรองเมืองเชียงใหม่อยู่ในบัญชีเบื้องต้นเมืองมรดกโลกขององค์การยูเนสโก้แล้ว ซึ่งขั้นตอนหลังจากนี้จะเป็นการจัดทำเอกสารต่างๆตามหลักเกณฑ์ที่องค์การยูเนสโก้กำหนดรวมทั้งแผนบริหารจัดการเมืองเชียงใหม่ เพื่อใช้ประกอบการพิจารณาและประกาศให้เมืองเชียงใหม่เป็นมรดกโลกอย่างเป็นทางการ
