ขยะพลาสติกได้กลายเป็นภัยคุกคามต่อสิ่งมีชีวิตในทะเล โดยปัจจุบันประเทศไทยมีปริมาณขยะพลาสติกมากถึง 2.7 ล้านตัน แบ่งเป็นถุงพลาสติก 80% หรือประมาณ 2 ล้านตัน เฉลี่ย 5,300 ตันต่อวัน โดยคนกรุงใช้ถุงพลาสติกเฉลี่ยคนละ 8 ใบต่อวัน ซึ่งกว่า 79% ยังคงตกค้างอยู่ในสิ่งแวดล้อม ไม่ได้ถูกนำไปรีไซเคิล ต้นเหตุสำคัญคือการกำจัดไม่ถูกวิธีและปริมาณที่เพิ่มขึ้น จึงต้องร่วมมือเพื่อหาแนวทางแก้ไขปัญหานี้อย่างเร่งด่วน
