ธีรเทพ วิโนทัย เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 16 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2528 เป็นบุตรของนายเทพไชย วิโนไทย ผู้สื่อข่าวกีฬาของหนังสือพิมพ์เดลินิวส์ กับนางพรสมจิต วิโนทัย เริ่มต้นเล่นฟุตบอลตั้งแต่เด็ก ๆ จบการศึกษาระดับชั้นอนุบาลจนถึงมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้นที่โรงเรียนกรุงเทพคริสเตียนวิทยาลัย ก่อนที่จะเดินทางไปเรียนต่อที่ประเทศอังกฤษที่โรงเรียนเบรนท์วูด เมืองเอสเซ็กส์ ซึ่งเหตุการณ์หลังจากนี้ ได้เริ่มทำให้ลีซอมีชื่อเสียงในประเทศไทยมากขึ้น
ชีวิตที่อังกฤษของลีซอนั้น นอกจากจะไปเรียนแล้ว ยังได้รับโอกาสเป็นนักฟุตบอลฝึกหัดของสโมสรคริสตัล พาเลซ ตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2002 (พ.ศ. 2545) ซึ่งตรงจุดนี้เอง ทำให้สื่อไทยเริ่มสนใจลีซอมากขึ้น เพราะเป็นคนไทยเพียงไม่กี่คนที่จะได้ฝึกฟุตบอลกับสโมสรระดับอาชีพในประเทศที่มีคนไทยสนใจฟุตบอลลีกนั้นมากเป็นอันดับ 1

ต่อมาในปี ค.ศ. 2005 (พ.ศ. 2548) ลีซอก็ได้เซ็นสัญญาเป็นนักเตะเยาวชนของสโมสรเอฟเวอร์ตัน ในโครงการช้างไทยไปเอฟเวอร์ตัน โดยมีสมปอง สอเหลบ และรัตพล ปิยวุฒิสกุล เป็นเพื่อนร่วมโครงการ โดยอยู่ได้ 1 ปีก็ย้ายกลับมาค้าแข้งในประเทศไทยกับสโมสรบีอีซี เทโรศาสน พ.ศ. 2549 ซึ่งการย้ายมาบีอีซีฯ ลีซอทำผลงานได้ดี จนได้รับความสนใจจากสโมสร เค. ลีร์เซ่ สโมสรดิวิชั่น 2 ของเบลเยียม
