ตามตำนานเล่าว่า พระพุทธเจ้าได้เทศน์สั่งสอนยักษ์ให้ลดทิฐิมานะ
ยักษ์ที่ได้ฟังและเข้าใจในพระธรรมจึงได้กลายมาเป็นผู้อุปถัมภ์ค้ำชูพระพุทธศาสนา

หรืออีกนัยหนึ่งก็หมายถึงผู้แบกสรวงสวรรค์และทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้ปกป้องคุ้มครองสถูปสถาน และอาคารศักดิ์สิทธิ์
เพื่อเป็นการค้ำชูพระพุทธศาสนาให้มั่งคงและเจริญรุ่งเรืองสืบต่อมา
