ปุริมพรรษา คือ การเข้าเข้าพรรษาแรก เริ่มตั้งแต่วันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 8 ของทุกปี (สำหรับในปีอธิกมาส หมายถึง ปีที่มีเดือน 8 สองหน จะเริ่มในวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 8 หลัง) จนถึงวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 11 ภายหลังจากออกพรรษาแล้ว พระภิกษุที่อยู่จำพรรษาครบ 3 เดือน มีสิทธิที่จะรับกฐิน ซึ่งมีช่วงเวลาเพียง 1 เดือน (นับตั้งแต่วันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 11 ถึงขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 12)

ปัจฉิมพรรษา คือ การเข้าพรรษาหลัง ใช้สำหรับกรณีที่พระภิกษุต้องเดินทางไกล หรือมีเหตุสุดวิสัย ทำให้กลับมาเข้าพรรษาแรก (ปุริมพรรษา) ในวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 8 ไม่ทัน ต้องรอไปเข้าพรรษาหลัง คือ วันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 9 และจะไปออกพรรษาในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 12 ซึ่งพระภิกษุที่เข้าปัจฉิมพรรษาจะไม่มีโอกาสได้รับกฐิน เนื่องจากช่วงเวลากฐินหมดไปแล้ว แต่จะได้พรรษาเช่นเดียวกับพระภิกษุที่เข้าปุริมพรรษา
