การฟันดาบในประเทศไทยเริ่มขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2478 แต่ไม่ได้ดำเนินการมาโดยต่อเนื่อง จนถึงปี พ.ศ. 2508 กีฬาฟันดาบจึงได้รับความสนใจจากประชาชนแต่เป็นเพียงส่วนน้อย และค่อยๆ ได้รับความสนใจมากยิ่งขึ้นไปเรื่อยๆ สมาคมนักฟันดาบสมัครเล่นฯจึงได้เกิดขึ้น และได้แพร่หลายไปในต่างประเทศ
