จากรายงานของ International Data Corporation (IDC) คาดการณ์ว่าปี 2020 นี้จำนวนข้อมูลดิจิทัลทั่วโลก หรือ Big Data มีแนวโน้มว่าจะเพิ่มสูงขึ้นเป็น 35 เซตทาไบต์ จาก 5 เซตทาไบต์ ในปี 2010 ปัจจัยที่เร่งสร้างข้อมูลให้มีมากขึ้นอย่างน่าตกใจในเวลาอันสั้น คือ เทคโนโลยีและนวัตกรรมใหม่ ๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Smart Phone ที่กระตุ้นการอัพโหลดข้อมูลต่าง ๆ เช่น คอมเมนต์ วิดีโอ และรูปภาพ ไปจนถึงอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ที่สวมใส่ได้ ฟังเผิน ๆ ประเด็น Big Data เหมือนไม่ต่างอะไรจากการจัดการและวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลที่บริษัทต่าง ๆ ทำอยู่เป็นประจำ แต่ด้วยลักษณะเฉพาะของมันทำให้การจัดการและการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลปริมาณมหาศาลมีความซับซ้อนกว่า ยุ่งยากกว่า และไม่ใช่เรื่องที่ทุกบริษัททำได้
