The findings
International studies on the impact of clinical leadership
development are scarce. Most researchers
quantify the impact without first understanding the
dynamics caused by leadership development. The
present study reveals some new insights into the
complex phenomenon of leadership development and
its impact on the clinical leader and the nursing team.
Its impact on the caregiving process, however,
remains difficult to describe.
Leadership development is an ongoing, interactive
process that takes place between the clinical leader and
team members. Leadership development indisputably
led to positive changes, as manifested in the clinical
leaders personal effectiveness. Comparing the competencies
of the clinical leader with those described in the
literature reveal numerous similarities (Barter 2002,
Kouzes & Posner 2002, Hamric et al. 2005). The participants
descriptions pointed to a leader who tries to
instill faith and respect, treats each employee as an
individual, stimulates innovative ways of problem
solving, provides challenging goals and communicates
his vision as a nurse and as a leader (Scott et al. 1999).
Our pilot study concluded that clinical leaders had
more transformational leadership qualities and fewer
transactional leadership qualities after CLP participation,
suggesting that the clinical leader transitioned
from being a victim to a more proactive partner in the
hospital system; the major areas where changes took
