วันชาติฝรั่งเศสตรงกับวันที่ 14 กรกฎาคมของทุกปี ซึ่งถือเป็นวันแห่งการปฎิวัติการปกครองจากระบบเจ้าขุนมูลนายไปสู่การปกครองในระบอบสาธารณรัฐ โดยประชาชนทั่วทั้งประเทศได้ลุกฮือขึ้นต่อต้านการปกครองแบบยุกโบราณจนกระทั้งได้รับชัยชนะเป็นครั้งแรกจากบุกเข้าทลายคุกบาสติลที่เปรียบเสมือนเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของการกดขี่ประชาชน เมื่อ 209 ปีก่อนและนำไปสู่การล้มล้างระบอบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์ได้สำเร็จ โดยสมัชชาแห่งชาติได้กำหนดโครงสร้างกฏหมายฉบับใหม่ที่ยกเลิกการให้ความมีเอกสิทธิ์ ขจัดเรื่องสินบนและล้มเลิกระบบฟิวดัล(ระบบศักดินา) จากนั้นต่อมาจึงมีการจัดงานฉลองแห่งชาติขึ้นเรียกว่า “The Feast of the Federation” เนื่องในโอกาสครบรอบ 1 ปีของเหตุการณ์จลาจลที่กองกำลังแห่งชาติจากทั่วประเทศได้เดินทางรวมพลกันที่ “Champs-de-Mars” ในกรุงปารีส

แต่พอหลังจากนั้นการจัดงานฉลองเพื่อรำลึกถึงเหตุการณ์ของวันที่ 14 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ.2332 ก็ต้องหยุดไปเนื่องจากสถานการณ์ภายในประเทศยังคงไม่สงบเกิดสงครามปฏิวัติขึ้นหลายครั้งในช่วงระยะเวลาปี พ.ศ.2335-2345 และมาในสมัย “the Third Republic*”นี้เอง รัฐบาลจึงได้มีความคิดที่จะรื้อฟื้นการจัดงานเฉลิมฉลองวันชาติฝรั่งเศสขึ้นมาใหม่ โดยมีการผ่านร่างกฎหมายฉบับเมื่อวันที่ 6 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ.2423 ขึ้นมา ซึ่งกำหนดให้วันที่ 14 กรกฎาคม ของทุกปีเป็น “วันชาติฝรั่งเศส”และได้จัดงานเฉลิมฉลองครั้งแรกขึ้นในปีเดียวกันนั้น
