เป็นครั้งแรกที่มีเส้นทางการแข่งขันไตรกีฬา ถึง 3 ประเทศ ไทย-ลาว-เมียนมาร์ เพื่อเฉลิมพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ เนื่องในวันฉัตรมงคล โดยมี ดร.สุวัตร สิทธิหล่อ ปลัดกระทรวงการท่องเที่ยวและกีฬา ท่านผู้หญิงวิลาวัณย์ วีรานุวัตติ์ ประธานกรรมการมูลนิธิโทรทัศน์เฉลิมพระเกียรติ ผ่านดาวเทียม นายชาติชาย สงวนพงษ์ ปลัดจังหวัดเชียงราย ร่วมกันเปิดงานไตรกีฬาสามเหลี่ยมทองคำ ในกลุ่มอนุภูมิภาคลุ่มแม่น้ำโขงชิงถ้วยพระราชทานสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ไตรกีฬา ประกอบด้วย ว่ายน้ำ ปั่นจักรยาน และวิ่ง มีนักกีฬาเข้าร่วมกว่า 300 คน ผลการแข่งขัน แบ่งเป็น 3 ประเภท ได้แก่ ประเภทชายเดี่ยว ไมเคิล เมอฟรี จากประเทศออสเตรเลีย ประเภทหญิงเดี่ยว แคโรล ฟิชส์ จากประเทศฝรั่งเศส และประเภททีม Phattaraphon Noimor/Boonthung Srisung/Punthawat Dibteja จากประเทศไทย
