สร้างขึ้นในสมัยสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 โดยทหารญี่ปุ่นได้ควบคุมเชลยสงครามมาทำการก่อสร้างในปี พ.ศ.2486 เพื่อข้ามแม่น้ำแควใหญ่เชื่อมทางรถไฟไปพม่า เปิดใช้อย่างเป็นทางการในวันที่ 2 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2486 หลังจากนั้นสะพานแห่งนี้ก็เป็นเป้าหมายในการโจมตีของฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตร
