ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2469 ทางการได้พิจารณาจัดตั้งกองการบิน สังกัดกองทัพบกขึ้น ซึ่งภายหลังได้ยกฐานะเป็นกองทัพอากาศ พร้อมทั้งได้ขอพระราชทานเปลี่ยนชื่อจากดอนอีเหยี่ยวเป็น ดอนเมือง โดยอยู่ในฐานะตำบลดอนเมืองและต่อมาเป็นตำบลตลาดบางเขน อำเภอบางเขน จังหวัดพระนคร[2]

จนกระทั่งในปี พ.ศ. 2515 ได้มีประกาศคณะปฏิวัติจัดตั้งกรุงเทพมหานครขึ้นแทนที่นครหลวงกรุงเทพธนบุรีซึ่งเกิดจากการรวมกันของจังหวัดพระนครและจังหวัดธนบุรี อำเภอบางเขนได้รับการเปลี่ยนแปลงฐานะเป็นเขตบางเขน ส่วนตำบลต่าง ๆ ในท้องที่ก็มีฐานะเป็นแขวง

ภายหลังพื้นที่เขตบางเขนมีความเจริญและมีประชากรหนาแน่นขึ้น พื้นที่บางแห่งอยู่ไกลจากสำนักงานเขต กระทรวงมหาดไทยจึงได้รวมแขวงสีกัน แขวงทุ่งสองห้อง และแขวงตลาดบางเขนจัดตั้ง เขตดอนเมือง กรุงเทพมหานคร ในวันที่ 4 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2532 จากนั้นก็ได้มีประกาศกระทรวงมหาดไทยเปลี่ยนแปลงพื้นที่เขตดอนเมืองและจัดตั้งเขตหลักสี่เมื่อวันที่ 14 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2540 ทำให้แขวงตลาดบางเขนถูกแบ่งออกเป็นสองส่วน คือส่วนที่แยกไปรวมกับเขตหลักสี่กับส่วนที่ยังอยู่ในเขตดอนเมือง ต่อมากรุงเทพมหานครจึงประกาศจัดตั้งแขวงสีกันเต็มพื้นที่เขตดอนเมือง โดยรวมพื้นที่แขวงตลาดบางเขนเดิมเข้าไว้ด้วยเพื่อความชัดเจนในการปกครอง

เนื่องด้วยยังไม่มีประกาศกำหนดแนวพื้นที่แขวงให้มีความชัดเจนแน่นอน ทำให้เกิดความสับสน แก่ประชาชนและเจ้าหน้าที่ผู้ปฏิบัติงาน กรุงเทพมหานครจึงเปลี่ยนแปลงพื้นที่แขวงสีกัน และตั้งแขวงดอนเมืองและแขวงสนามบินขึ้นมาเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2552[3]
