คณะผู้ก่อตั้งวิทยาลัย ได้เลือกที่ดินบริเวณตำบลคูคตในขณะนั้น อำเภอเมืองปทุมธานี จังหวัดปทุมธานี ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของทุ่งรังสิต เป็นสถานที่ก่อตั้ง จึงได้นำมงคลนาม รังสิต อันเนื่องมาจากพระนามของ สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้ารังสิตประยูรศักดิ์ กรมพระยาชัยนาทนเรนทร พระราชโอรสในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว มาตั้งเป็นชื่อของวิทยาลัย

ต่อมา ในวันที่ 25 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2528 ทบวงมหาวิทยาลัย ออกประกาศจัดตั้งวิทยาลัยรังสิต ลงนามโดย นายปรีดา พัฒนถาบุตร รัฐมนตรีว่าการทบวงมหาวิทยาลัยในขณะนั้น และประกาศลงในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่มที่ 102 ตอนที่ 28 ก ฉบับพิเศษ หน้า 5 เมื่อวันที่ 1 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2528 โดยเป็นไปตามที่ระบุใน ใบอนุญาตจัดตั้งสถาบันอุดมศึกษาเอกชน ที่ 2/2528

วิทยาลัยรังสิต ตั้งอยู่ภายในโครงการหมู่บ้านเมืองเอก บนถนนพหลโยธิน ตำบลหลักหก อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดปทุมธานี บนพื้นที่ 10 ไร่ ห่างจากท่าอากาศยานดอนเมือง เป็นระยะทาง 3 กิโลเมตร เริ่มเปิดการเรียนการสอนครั้งแรก เมื่อปีการศึกษา 2529 ในคณะพยาบาลศาสตร์ และคณะบริหารธุรกิจ โดยมีนักศึกษารุ่นแรก จำนวน 478 คน
