ประวัติและความเป็นมา:
แต่เดิมชะอำมีชื่อว่า "ชะอาน" เล่ากันว่าเมื่อครั้งที่สมเด็จพระนเรศวรยกทัพมาทางใต้ ทรงนำทัพมาเมืองนี้เพื่อพักกำลังไพร่พลช้างม้า และล้างอานม้า ซึ่งได้ชื่อว่า "ชะอาน" ต่อมาเพี้ยนเป็น "ชะอำ"

ซึ่งอดีตมีความเจริญด้านการท่องเที่ยว ตั้งแต่เริ่มมีเส้นทางคมนาคมทางรถไฟ พ.ศ.2459 แต่เดิมเป็นตำบลในเขตการปกครองของ อำเภอนายาง เมื่อ อำเภอนายางได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น อำเภอหนองจอก ในสมัยสงครามเอเชียบูรพา ครั้งนั้นกระทรวงมหาดไทยย้ายอำเภอหนองจอกมาตั้งที่ ตำบลชะอำ และเปลี่ยนชื่อ อำเภอหนองจอก เป็น อำเภอชะอำในปัจจุบัน ตำบลชะอำจึงอยู่ในเขตอำเภอชะอำตั้งแต่ พ.ศ.2487 เป็นต้นมา ปัจจุบันนี้ ตำบลชะอำอยู่ในเขตการปกครองของเทศบาล ตำบลชะอำ จังหวัดเพชรบุรี
