ได้เสนอให้จัดตั้งเขตการค้าเสรีอาเซียน หรือ ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) ในปี 2535 เพื่อลดภาษีศุลกากรระหว่างกัน อันจะช่วยส่งเสริมการค้าภายในอาเซียนให้มีปริมาณเพิ่มขึ้น ลดต้นทุนการผลิตสินค้าและดึงดูดการลงทุนจากต่างประเทศ ต่อมา อาเซียนได้ขยายความร่วมมือด้านเศรษฐกิจเพิ่มเติมเพื่อให้การรวมตัวทางเศรษฐกิจสมบูรณ์แบบและมีทิศทางชัดเจน โดยจัดตั้งเขตลงทุนอาเซียน หรือ ASEAN Investment Area (AIA) ในปี 2541 เพื่อส่งเสริมการลงทุนทั้งภายในและภายนอกภูมิภาค ส่งเสริมการเปิดการค้าเสรี การท่องเที่ยว การเงิน การเกษตร และสนับสนุนการเชื่อมโยงด้านคมนาคมขนส่งโดยไทยได้เสนอให้จัดทำความตกลงว่าด้วยการอำนวยความสะดวกในการขนส่งสินค้าผ่านแดนและข้ามแดน
