I am writing to give you advance notice of a continuing campaign Greenpeace says it will mount against Thai Union.

At the Seafood Summit held in Malta in February, John Hocevar, ocean campaign director at Greenpeace, said the organisation will step up its campaign against Thai Union and the companies that buy from us in 2016. We understand Greenpeace are planning a major launch which is likely to challenge our tuna operations, our efforts to increase traceability, and our work to protect human rights and improve labour practices in Thailand. While we do not know the exact nature of the campaign, or exactly when it will be launched, we felt you should be aware of it as you may also be targeted as a customer.

Mr Hocevar’s comments were in stark contrast to those of the migrant rights’ activist, Andy Hall, who also attended the Summit and praised Thai Union for its ongoing efforts to clean up its supply chain.
Hall told delegates:

“They (Thai Union), along with the Migrant Workers Rights Network [MWRN] have done a lot of really exciting stuff recently at the top of their supply chain.
They have shown to us that they want to develop social dialogue, want to hear from the workers, and want to get complaint mechanisms working in their factories. They really have a lot to be proud of.”

It was refreshing to see this comment receiving coverage in Undercurrent News, demonstrating the start of a more balanced dialogue amongst activist groups.

We understand that we will take some heat in the media coverage that will follow the Greenpeace launch. However, for our part, we are continuing to move forward on our commitments to oceans and people through our Sea Change sustainability strategy. Sea Change will be launched with an industry wide consultation, as well as the provision of points of our progress in the past 18 months. I will share more details of Sea Change with you in the coming weeks.
