สถาบันคุณวุฒิวิชาชีพ เป็นองค์การมหาชน ภายใต้การกำกับดูแลของนายกรัฐมนตรี ก่อตั้งขึ้นเพื่อพัฒนาระบบคุณวุฒิวิชาชีพ ด้วยการจัดทำมาตรฐานอาชีพ รับรององค์กรที่ออกใบรับรองสมรรถนะให้กับบุคคล เผยแพร่ความรู้เกี่ยวกับระบบคุณวุฒิวิชาชีพและมาตรฐานอาชีพ รวมถึงประเมินองค์กรที่ออกใบรับรอง การดำเนินงานของสถาบันคุณวุฒิวิชาชีพส่งเสริมการต่อยอดทักษะและความรู้ของผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพ ลดเวลาและค่าใช้จ่ายในการฝึกอบรมของผู้ประกอบการ รวมทั้งเพิ่มขีดความสามารถในการแข่งขันของประเทศและเพิ่มมูลค่าทางเศรษฐกิจด้วยทรัพยากรมนุษย์
