โดยจัดเก็บภาษีสรรพสามิตเพียง 0.005 บาทต่อลิตรจากเดิม 5.30 บาทต่อลิตรนั้น

ทำให้รัฐต้องสูญเสียรายได้สะสมจากการอุดหนุนภาษีไปแล้ว 330,000 ล้านบาท

ซึ่งผลของนโยบายนี้ทำให้มีปริมาณการใช้น้ำมันดีเซลเพิ่มสูงขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็วและทำให้ระยะหลังมีรถยนต์ส่วนตัวเครื่องยนต์ดีเซลราคาแพงๆ วิ่งเต็มท้องถนน แทนที่จะเอาภาษีที่ควรจะได้จำนวนนี้ นำไปพัฒนาระบบรถไฟฟ้าได้หลายสายเลยทีเดียว
