อาเซียน (ASEAN) หรือ สมาคมประชาชาติ

อาเซียน (ASEAN) หรือ สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี 2510 โดยในระยะแรกนั้น มีสมาชิกเริ่มแรกจํานวน 6 ประเทศ ได้แก่ บรูไนดารุสซาลาม อินโดนีเซีย มาเลเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์สิงคโปร์และไทยภายหลังได้มีสมาชิกเพิ่มขึ้นอีก4 ประเทศคือกัมพูชาลาวพม่าและเวียดนาม หรือที่เรียกกันว่าCLMVโดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสร้างสันติภาพในภูมิภาคอันจะนําไปสู่ความเจริญก้าวหน้าทาง เศรษฐกิจสังคมและวัฒนธรรมและได้มีการรวมกลุ่มเพื่อขยายความร่วมมือและการค้าระหว่างกันให้มากยิ่งขึ้น โดยการจัดทําเขตการค้าเสรีอาเซียน (AFTA) เมื่อปี 2535
ต่อมาในปี 2546 อาเซียนได้กําหนดทิศทางที่แน่ชัดว่าความร่วมมือจะต้องเดินทางไปสู่การเป็นประชาคม เศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (ASEAN Economic Community: AEC) ภายในปี 2558 ทั้งนี้ ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจ อาเซียนนั้นถือเป็นเพียงหนึ่งในสามเสาหลักของประชาคมอาเซียน (ASEAN Community) โดยอีกสองเสาหลัก คือประชาคมความมั่นคงอาเซียน(ASEAN Security Community) และประชาคมสังคมและวัฒนธรรม อาเซียน (ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community) และได้มีการจัดทํากฎบัตรอาเซียน (ASEAN Charter) เพื่อ การดําเนินงานไปสู่ประชาคมอาเซียน
