2.1 แนวคิดและทฤษฎีเกี่ยวกับการเกิดอุบัติเหตุ
2.1.1 ความหมายของอุบัติเหตุและอุบัติเหตุจากการทํางาน
นักวิชาหลายคนให้ความหมายของคำว่าอุบัติเหตุไว้ ดังนี้

อุบัติเหตุ หมายถึง เหตุการที่เกิดขึ้นโดยไม่ได้วางแผนไว้ล่วงหน้า ซึ่งก่อให้เกิด การบาดเจ็บ พิการ หรือตายและทำให้ทรัพย์สินเกิดความเสียหาย ความหมายในเชิงวิศวกรรม อุบัติเหตุยังมีความหมายครอบคลุมถึงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วมีผลกระทบกระเทือนต่อขบวนการผลิตปกติ ทำให้เกิดความล่าช้า หยุดชะงัก หรือเสียเวลา แม้จะไม่ก่อให้เกิดการบาดเจ็บ พิการ ก็ตาม (วิฑูรย์ สิมะโชคดี และวีรพงษ์ เฉลิมจิระรัตน์, 2553 และ ศีขรินทร์ สุขโต, 2553)

1. อุบัติเหตุนั้นไม่ได้จำกัดผลที่เกิดขึ้นกับมนุษย์ว่าต้องเป็นเพียงการบาดเจ็บเท่านั้นโดยใช้ถ้อยคำว่า “เป็นอันตรายแก่มนุษย์” ซึ่งจะรวมความถึงการบาดเจ็บและการเจ็บป่วย ทั้งจากสภาวะจิตที่เบี่ยงเบน ผลกระทบทางประสาทและระบบอื่น ๆ อันเนื่องมาจากการทำงานหรือสภาวะ ในการทำงานที่ต้องเผชิญ
2. การบาดเจ็บหรือเจ็บป่วยเป็นผลมาจากอุบัติเหตุ แต่มิใช่ว่าอุบัติเหตุทุกครั้ง จะก่อให้เกิดการบาดเจ็บหรือเจ็บป่วยเสมอไป
3. เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดมีผลต่อการสร้างความเสียหายให้แก่ทรัพย์สินหรือกระบวน การผลิตเพียงอย่างเดียว โดยไม่มีการบาดเจ็บหรือเจ็บป่วยแต่อย่างใด ก็ถือให้เป็นอุบัติเหตุด้วยเช่นกัน
กิตติ อินทรานนท์ และจิตรา รู้กิจการพานิช (2555) ได้ให้ความหมายของอุบัติเหตุว่าหมายถึง สิ่งหรือเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นโดยไม่ได้คาดหวัง ไม่ถูกต้อง แต่ไม่จำเป็นว่าจะเกิดอันตรายหรือไม่ แต่จะเป็นสิ่งขัดขวางการทำงานหรือกิจกรรมไม่ให้เสร็จตามกำหนดเช่น คนงานตกบันไดจนบาดเจ็บมากหรือน้อยก็เป็นอุบติเหตุ
