ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติเป็นสิ่งจำเป็นในการดำรงชีวิตมนุษย์ถ้าเราใช้ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติมากเกินไปหรือใช้อย่างไม่ถูกวิธีก็อาจทำให้เกิดปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมตามมาได้ดังนั้นเราจึงควรร่วมใจกันใช้ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติอย่างประหยัดและคุ้มค่า การใช้ทรัพยากรอย่างประหยัดและคุ้มค่ามีแนวปฏิบัติที่เรียกว่าหลัก 3 R ดังนี้

1. ลดการใช้ (Reduce) การลดการใช้ทรัพยากร หมายถึง การลดปริมาณการใช้ทรัพยากรให้อยู่ในสัดส่วนที่เหมาะสมหรือการใช้ทรัพยากรอย่างคุ้มค่า เช่น การปิดน้ำและไฟเมื่อไม่ใช้งาน ซึ่งเป็นการลดการใช้เชื้อเพลิงหรือแหล่งพลังงานที่ใช้ในการผลิตกระแสไฟฟ้าเป็นต้น
