ภาษาพม่าต่างจากภาษาไทยมาก เพราะทั้งไวยากรณ์ อักษรพิเศษ การผันคำ และการออกเสียง โดยเฉพาะภาษาพม่ามีการพ่นลมและกล่องเสียงสั่น แม้อักษรควบกล้ำและสระบางตัวมาจากภาษาบาลีสันสกฤตเช่นเดียวกัน แต่มีการออกเสียงต่างจากไทยโดยสิ้นเชิง ที่สำคัญภาษาพม่าแทบจะไม่มีตัวสะกดแท้ๆเลย
