สิ่งแวดล้อมอาจจำแนกตามสถานที่แบ่งออกได้เป็น๔แหล่งใหญ่ ๆคือ สิ่งแวดล้อมในบ้าน สิ่งแวดล้อมในที่ทำงาน สิ่งแวดล้อมในชุมชนหรือท้องถิ่น และสิ่งแวดล้อมข้ามพรมแดน ซึ่งสิ่งแวดล้อมดังกล่าวนั้นอาจทำให้เกิดมลพิษต่างๆได้มากมาย ทั้งมลพิษทางน้ำ ทางอากาศ ทางอาหาร หรือทางดิน ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่แล้วปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมเหล่านี้ล้วนเกิดมาจากการกระทำของมนุษย์ทั้งสิ้น และเมื่อเกิดขึ้นมาแล้ว ก็ส่งผลสะท้อนกลับเข้าหาตัวของมนุษย์นั่นเอง ดังนั้นแนวทางในการแก้ไขปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมจึงไม่ใช่การแก้ไขปัญหาทีละส่วน หากแต่ต้องแก้ไขไปพร้อมๆกัน ทั้งในด้านเทคนิค ด้านของการควบคุมและด้านของการจัดการของหน่วยงานหรือบุคคลที่ทำให้เกิดปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมนั้นๆร่วมกัน จึงจะทำให้สามารถบรรเทาหรือแก้ไขปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมได้ในที่สุด

๑ ประเภทของสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ก่อให้เกิดสภาพปัญหาสุขภาพ

สิ่งแวดล้มที่มีผลต่อสุขภาพ อาจจะพิจารณาในแง่มุมที่เป็นตัวแทนของพื้นที่หรือขอบเขตของสถานที่ได้ดังนี้

๑.๑) สิ่งแวดล้อมในบ้าน เป็นสิ่งแวดล้อมที่อยู่ใกล้ชิดตัวเรามากที่สุด การสัมผัสกับสิ่งแวดล้อมประเภทนี้เกิดขึ้นได้ตลอดเวลาที่เราอยู่ภายในบ้าน เช่น อุปกรณ์ที่ใช้ในการประกอบอาหารเครื่องมือหรืออุปกรณ์ที่ใช้กับน้ำดื่ม ประเภทของอาคาร โดยพบว่าอาคารแต่ละแบบก็มีโอกาสที่จะก่อให้เกิดปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมได้แตกต่างกัน เช่น อาคารที่เป็นตึก ก็จะมีผลที่แตกต่างจากอาคารที่เป็นไม้และบางครั้งก็ทาสีภายในอาคาร ก็ส่งผลต่อสุขภาพของผู้อยู่อาศัยด้วยเช่นกัน นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่ากิจกรรมทางด้านการเกษตรหรืออุตสาหกรรมที่ดำเนินอยู่ภายในหรือรอบบริเวณบ้าน งานอดิเรก สารเคมีกำจัดแมลงและศัตรูพืชที่ใช้ในบ้านเรือนและสวน และรวมถึงนิสัยการรับประทานอาหารของครอบครัวและบุคคลด้วย จึงเห็นได้ว่าสิ่งแวดล้อมต่อไปนี้สัมผัสหรือเกี่ยวข้องกับตัวเราอยู่ตลอดเวลา

๑.๒) สิ่งแวดล้อมในที่ทำงาน คนเราอาจจะใช้เวลาส่วนใหญ่ของชีวิตในสภาพแวดล้อมของการประกอบอาชีพ เช่นสถานที่ทำงานในสำนักงาน โรงงาน เหมืองแร่ ฯลฯ ซึ่งที่เหล่านี้อาจจะมีสภาพปัญหาแวดล้อมและประเภทของการสัมผัสสารเคมีที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะ หรือการใช้เวลาในโรงเรียนหรือสถานศึกษาอื่นๆก็อาจจะนำมาพิจารณาภายใต้หัวข้อนี้ได้

๑.๓) สิ่งแวดล้อมในชุมชนหรือท้องถิ่น คนๆหนึ่งอาจจะได้รับสัมผัสกับมลพิษทางอากาศที่มีสาเหตุมาจากการจราจร หรือุตสาหกรรมในท้องถิ่น หรือรับสัมผัสสารเคมีที่รั่วไหลออกมาจากสถานที่ทิ้งขยะในท้องถิ่น หรือเสียงดังจากการจารจรเป็นต้นซึ่งเหล่านี้มักเกิดในบริเวณที่คนเหล่านั้นอาศัยอยู่

๑.๔) สิ่งแวดล้อมข้ามพรมแดน ซึ่งหมายถึงสิ่งแวดล้อมในระดับทางภูมิภาค ระดับชาติ ระดับระหว่างประเทศ และระดับโลก การสัมผัสกับสิ่งคุกคามที่เกี่ยวข้อง ได้แก่มลพิษทางอากาศ เช่น การเกิดควันพิษจากการเผาป่าในประเทศอินโดนีเซียที่ส่งผลกระทบถึงภาคใต้ของประเทศไทย เป็นต้น มลพิษทางแม่น้ำหรือทะเล การขนกากของเสียอันตรายจากประเทศหนึ่งสู่อีกประเทศหนึ่ง มลพิษทางกัมมันตภาพรังสีจากอุบัติเหตุนิวเครียร์ การสัมผัสรังสีอัลตราไวโอเลต อันเป็นผลที่เกิดจากการลดลงของโอโซนในชั้นบรรยากาศ และการเปลี่ยนแปลงของโรคที่เกิดจากแมลงที่เป็นพาหะอันเนื่องมาจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงภูมิอากาศของโลก เป็นต้น

๒ ปฏิกิริยาลูกโซ่ระหว่างสิ่งแวดล้อมกับสุขภาพ
