มาสโลว์ได้ตั้งทฤษฎีเกี่ยวกับ แรงจูงใจ(Maslow’s General Theory of Human & Motivation) โดยมาสโลว์ ได้อธิบายถึงความต้องการของมนุษย์ ซึ่งมีลักษณะเป็นลำดับขั้นจากต่ำไปหาสูง (Hierarchy& Needs) และเป็นทฤษฎีที่ยอมรับกันแพร่หลายสมมติฐานดังกล่าวมีความเกี่ยวกับ พฤติกรรมของมนุษย์ดังนี้ (Abraham H.Maslow. 1954: 80 - 106)
1.ต้องการของร่างกาย เป็นความต้องการพื้นฐานเพื่อความอยู่รอดของชีวิต ความต้องการการยกย่อง
2.ความต้องการความปลอดภัย เป็นความต้องการที่เหนือกว่าความต้องการอยู่รอด ซึ่งมนุษย์ต้องการเพิ่มความต้องการในระดับที่สูงขึ้น
3.ความต้องการด้านสังคม หรือความต้องการความรักและการยอมรับ (Love and belongingness needs) ความต้องการทั้งในแง่ของการให้และการได้รับซึ่งความรัก ความต้องการเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของหมู่คณะ ความต้องการให้ได้การยอมรับ เป็นต้น
4.ความต้องการการยกย่อง ซึ่งเป็นความต้องการการยกย่องส่วนตัว, ความนับถือและสถานะจากสังคม
5.ความต้องการประสบความสำเร็จสูงสุดในชีวิต เป็นความต้องการสูงสุดแต่ล่ะบุคคล ซึ่งถ้าบุคคลใดบรรลุความต้องการในขั้นนี้ได้ จะได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นบุคคลพิเศษ
