การจัดกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่โดยใช้ระบบS
การจัดกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่โดยใช้ระบบSOTUS นั้นมีผลกระทบที่สำคัญอีกด้านหนึ่งคือด้านจิตใจซึ่งมีทั้งผลกระทบที่ดีและผลกระทบที่ไม่ดีในกิจกรรมการรับน้อง สมสมร วงศ์รจิต(2538 : 138-149) ศึกษาผลดีต่อจิตใจของการรับน้องที่มีความรุนแรงโดยใช้ระบบSOTUSคือทำให้จิตใจเข้มแข็งและเกิดความอดทน สำเนาว์ ขจรศิลป์ และบุญเรียง ขจรศิลป์ ศึกษาปัญหาการรับน้องใหม่และประชุมเชียร์ การประชุมเชียร์โดยการบังคับให้น้องใหม่ไปฝึกซ้อมเพลงเชียร์เป็นเวลาครั้งละหลายชั่วโมงเป็นเวลาสี่ถึงหกสัปดาห์และมีกาลงโทษด้วยวิธีการต่างๆ และการปล้นหอ ทำให้นักศึกษาใหม่มีปัญหาทางด้านสุขภาพจิต โดยเฉพาะผู้ที่มีปัญหาทางด้านสุขภาพจิตอยู่แล้ว เมื่อต้องมาถูกว๊าก ถูกลงโทษ หรือถูกปล้นหอ ทำให้เกิดปัญหาทางด้านสุขภาพจิตมากขึ้น บางคนทนต่อสภาพการประชุมเชียร์ด้วยวิธีการดังกล่าวไม่ไหว ต้องลาออกจากการเป็นนักศึกษาไปในการจัดกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่และประชุมเชียร์ (ทบวงมหาวิทยาลัย.2543:5 – 6) ซึ่งที่ประชุมได้สรุปปัญหาของการจัดกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่และประชุมเชียร์พบว่า ปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นจากตัวนักศึกษาใหม่คือไม่เห็นความสำคัญหรือประโยชน์ของการเข้าร่วมกิจกรรม ไม่ได้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมด้วยความสมัครใจและบางคนเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมเพราะกลัวไม่ได้รับการยอมรับจากกลุ่มเพื่อนและกลุ่มรุ่นพี่ไม่กล้าบอกปัญหาหรืออุปสรรคในการเข้าร่วมกิจกรรม จึงส่งผลให้เกิดทัศนคติที่ไม่ดีต่อกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่และประชุมเชียร์ตลอดไป
(กัลยา นรสิงห์.2546:12; อ้างอิงจาก พรรพิมล นาคนาวา.2542:13) ศึกษาปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นมากมายจากการรับน้องใหม่ด้วยระบบโซตัส พบว่า นักศึกษาใหม่ที่ต้องจำนนต่อคำสั่งของรุ่นพี่ โดยไม่มีโอกาสได้คิดว่าเป็นความถูกต้องหรือชอบธรรมหรือไม่หรือแม้กระทั่งการรักษาสิทธิและเสรีภาพขอบตนเองในการเลือกที่จะไม่ปฏิบัติในสิ่งที่ตนไม่พึงประสงค์ซึ่งมิติสำคัญของวิถีประชาธิปไตย บูแคนัน และคณะ ได้ทำการวิจัยเกี่ยวกับการที่นักศึกษารุ่นพี่สั่งลงโทษหรือสั่งให้นักศึกษาใหม่ทำในสิ่งแปลกๆ แผลงๆ เรียกว่า hazing ทำให้นักศึกษาใหม่เกิดความอับอาย ความเจ็บปวดหรือความแค้น ซึ่งอาจก่อให้เกิดอันตรายแก่สุขภาพจิตจากสถิตปรากฏว่าจากปี ค.ศ. 1971 – 1981

ประการคือทำให้น้องใหม่สนิทสนมกับรุ่นพี่ ทำให้น้องใหม่เกิดความอบอุ่น
สถาบันวิจัยสังคม มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ (2542 : 80-94) ศึกษาทัศนคติของนักศึกษา
อาจารย์และผู้ปกครองเกี่ยวกับกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่และกิจกรรมเชียร์ของนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัย
เชียงใหม่พบว่า น้องใหม่เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมโดยไม่เต็มใจ แต่อยู่ในภาวะจำยอมเพราะน้องใหม่คิดว่า อาจารย์และมหาวิทยาลัยสนับสนุนรุ่นพี่ โดยรุ่นพี่ใช้เวลาของน้องใหม่มากเกินไป และทำให้นักศึกษาขาดสำนึกในการคัดค้านการปกครองแบบเผด็จการ คณาจารย์ส่วนใหญ่มีความคิดเห็นว่าการรับน้องที่ไม่เกี่ยวกับกิจกรรม
เชียร์ทำให้นักศึกษารู้จักกันและรักกันแต่การบังคับให้น้องใหม่เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมเชียร์เป็นการละเมิด

อรพินทร์ ชูชม และคณะ (2542 : 31-35) ศึกษาผลกระทบของการจัดกิจกรรมรับน้อง
ใหม่และการประชุมเชียร์ของมหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒวิทยาเขตประสานมิตรและวิทยาเขต
องครักษ์ พบว่า ผลกระทบจากกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่และประชุมเชียร์ด้านผลดีต่อนิสิตคือมีการช่วยเหลือเกื้อกูลซึ่งกันและกัน และมีความรับผิดชอบต่อหมู่คณะ ส่วนผลกระทบด้านผลเสียต่อนิสิตคือ มีความกดดันจิตใจ และผู้ปกครองเป็นห่วงและวิตกกังวล ธนรัตน์ สอนสา (2531) ศึกษาการต้อนรับน้องใหม่และการประชุมเชียร์ของนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น สำเนาว์ ขจรศิลป์;และบุญเรียง ขจรศิลป์ (2531) ศึกษาความคิดเห็นของนักศึกษาและผู้บริหารฝ่ายกิจการนักศึกษาเกี่ยวกับการประชุมเชียร์และการต้อนรับน้องใหม่
ของนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ ขอนแก่น เชียงใหม่ และสงขลา และสมสมร วงศ์จิต
(2533) ศึกษาการต้อนรับน้องใหม่และการประชุมเชียร์และการต้อนรับน้องใหม่ของนักศึกษา
มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร งานวิจัย 3 เรื่องนี้มีผลการวิจัยที่สอดคล้องกันซึ่งสรุปได้ดังนี้คือ ผลดีของการรับน้องใหม่และประชุมเชียร์ในลักษณะที่มีความรุนแรง คือ ทำให้จิตใจเข้มแข็ง ทำให้สนิทสนมกับเพื่อนมากขึ้น
ส่วนผลดีของการต้อนรับน้องใหม่และการประชุมเชียร์ในลักษณะที่ไม่มีความรุนแรง มีผลดีเพิ่มเติม คือ ทำให้เกิดความสนุกสนานอบอุ่น ผลเสียของการรับน้องใหม่และการประชุมเชียร์ ในลักษณะที่มีความรุนแรง คือ ทำให้เสียสุขภาพจิต เกิดอาการทางกายเนื่องมาจากความกดดันทางจิตใจ เกิดอาการวิตกกังวล
จนทำให้นักศึกษาที่ทนไม่ได้ต้องลาออกจากมมหาวิทยาลัยกลางคัน ทำให้เป็นคนก้าวร้าว เกิดความอับอาย ทำให้เป็นคนไม่มีเหตุผล เกิดความคับข้องใจ ทำให้ขาดอิสรภาพ
สุวิมล บุญจันทร์ (2547) ศึกษาความคิดเห็นนักศึกษาชั้นปีที่ 1 มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น ที่มีต่อการจัดกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่ ปีการศึกษา 2546 พบว่า มีผลดีคือ เกิดความสนุกสนาน ฝึกจิตใจให้เข้มแข็ง
ส่วนผลเสียของกิจกรรมรับน้องใหม่ คือ ขาดอิสรภาพ เสียสุขภาพจิต
ผลการศึกษาของตึกอุบัติเหตุและตึกฉุกเฉิน โรงพยาบาลศรีนครินทร์ฯ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น ในปี 2538-2540พบว่ามีนักศึกษา158 คนเป็นชาย 35 คน หญิง 123 คน เกิดโรคHVPERVENTILATION SYNDROME(อาการชักเกร็งทั่วร่างกายตัวแข็งหมือนหมดสติ หายใจหอบๆ) ผู้หญิงมากกว่าผู้ชาย ทั้งนี้เกิดจากความกลัว ความวิตกกังวลต่อสิ่งที่ไม่รู้และทำท่าของนักศึกษารุ่นพี่
จากการสำรวจสอบถามผลกระทบของระบบSOTUSทางด้านจิตใจจากนักศึกษา
